I’m currently sitting in the front seat of our van (the FriendSHIP) en route to St. Louis. This is how most of my year has been spent, somewhere between two cities, on my way to play a show, backstage at some venue waiting to play a show, on stage somewhere playing a show.
Ever since I was 13 when I picked up a guitar for the first time, that’s all I wanted to do. I’d sit and listen to my favorite bands on the bus on the way to school and obsess over their lyrics. I’d sit in class and put down whatever I was supposed to be studying to study what the guitars, bass, and drums were playing in my favorite songs. It was like a drug to me.
I’m on the verge of turning 23, and lately, I’ve been thinking about what that 13 year old kid would think of me now. To be honest, I think he would be fucking stoked. I’m doing what he only dreamt of. Sure, we’re not the biggest band in the world and I may not be making millions, but I’m doing what that 13 year old kid would have killed to do.
Sometimes I forget that, sometimes I think we all forget that what’s important is doing what you’re passionate about and never settling.
By the time this year is over, we will have played over 150 shows on 3 different continents. 10 years ago I would have never believed I’d do something like that. So in honor of my 13 year old self, I made a playlist of the bands and songs that made him want to start all of this.
Enjoy. “Don’t lose your dinosaur.”
